"This one's for all the teachers, the preachers, and the Star-Bellied Sneeches!" cries Dan McClure, guitar player feroshe as his band The Fasters took the stage Saturday night at Mt. Tabor Theater. Mr. Rios and I joined our friend Dan and his beautiful wife Noelle for an evening at the Mt. Tabor Theater, conveniently located 2 blocks from our home. Although I have lived in this neighborhood for almost 6 years, I have never been in this particular establishment before, although Greg has, once to see the old punk band Agent Orange.
Although you have to fight your way through piles of cigarette butts and spitting smokers outside, through a nightmarish hallway emblazoned with vulgar black light paintings, then sit through the first band's torturous, shallow and angsty mewling, Dan's band was totally worth it! The Fasters are tight, had a powerful guitar/bass/drum sound and funny lyrics!
They sing about education, useless degrees, needing to find a place to live, and breakfast cereal. They also have the coolest looking bass player ever! Tall, skinny, with huge aviator sunglasses and a very short mohawk, I thought he was awesome!
The spirit of rock and roll lived in that vile, black-lit hell hole!
The Fasters are a great new twist on old punk. And as they were mostly old enough to actually see shows when punk still actually existed, they KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT, MAN! And maybe if we're all lucky, the first band, "Ugly Flowers" will take some lessons on how to write a song. Please!
