Love Cannon

I DO love Cannon Beach! Somehow Mr. Rios and I were able to get the heck out of town and spend 3 beautiful ( and sometimes stormy ) days at the dazzling Oregon coast. Without child and with dog.
 Fun!

(See "A-line" for a discussion of my coast trip style issues.)
"The Inn at Cannon Beach" is our favorite dog-friendly hotel situated on the south side of Cannon Beach, away from the main tourist strip. The hotel is beautiful -- wood paneled, modern glass sculptures, cozy fireplaces, and awesome cookies in the lobby! It's also immaculately clean, has a great DVD rental list, views of the ocean, and a courtyard complete with fairy lights and koi pond. The whole neighborhood is great, lots of beautiful new beach houses that have great design, cute little markets and coffee shops, it's changed a lot recently and looks wonderful. Now I just need to get rid of my fear of tsunamis. I'm constantly noting where the "tsunami evacuation route" signs are pointing so I'll know where to go.  Basically, you just go up.

As you drive from the main part of town towards the south end  there is an absolutely jaw-dropping view of Haystack Rock on the way. It rivals any coastal view I've ever seen. Truly magnificent!

Right across the street from the hotel is the BEST LITTLE BAKERY called "Waves of Grain" where the
Raisin Bran muffin is coated with a killer butter/sugar/espresso glaze! And don't forget to try a chocolate chip cookie, you will die. Also, the carrot cake is amazing. Can you tell I've eaten too much there?

Mr. Rios and I were surprised and delighted by the lack of crowds, the quaint streets of Cannon Beach and Manzanita only peppered with a few souls like ourselves, congratulating each other on our luck to catch the frequent sun breaks on various verandas, over various beers. Delicious! We braved the very cold beach countless times in my TRUSTY DOWN JACKET and Darling Faye was perfectly behaved. She didn't eat anyone's lunch or run into the street--NOT ONCE! Good  Faye!!!

A great place to shop at the coast is at UNFURL in Manzanita! We love this shop's great clothes and amazing shoes for men and women! An unexpected fashion source, better even than most Portland stores. Plus the owners are the cutest and the sweetest!  This time through Greg scored a great pair of men's sneaks for $22, on super-sale from $65! I got some terrific-smelling soap. But I have a hankering after their natural abelone and pearl earrings, also several tops I saw, and of course their wonderful stick perfumes!

We also took a hike through Oswald West forest to the beach. The trails there are through old growth forest, and are densely and richly filled with entire waterfalls of giant ferns, huge rotting fallen trees with entire fern walls growing out of their root systems. Mossy banks and banana slugs. Freezing cold rushing streams and slippery rocks. Beautiful driftwood logs. It's heaven!

All in all, a successful voyage for the Rios troupe. Child enjoyed several days with Grammie in Eugene. Perfection all around!!
