Ramping Up the X-Prize

I am so excited about this X-Prize concept! I've blogged before about Burt Rutan's winning the 10 million dollar prize for creating a space vessel that reached the edge of space two times in two weeks. (And I've blogged about his hot sideburns.) Now the X-Prize is offering another ten million dollars to whoever can create a car that gets 100 miles to the gallon. This is exactly the way to by-pass the auto-industry's monopoly on transportation and the consumption of oil. Bob Lutz, VP of General Motors says he supports the X-Prize, but then reveals his real feelings with the quote, "We're really not that interested in technology as a science-fair project." Bastard!
So far my personal favorite is this amazingly beautiful pod from Aptera.

The X-Prize foundation is also sponsoring a competition for sending image-gathering modules to the moon, and another competition to sequence 100 human genomes in ten days for only $10,000 apiece. S…
