La Republic

Yesterday France elected conservative candidate Nicolas Sarkozy to be president. He has been called "an american with a french passport" because of his efforts to repair relations with the US. Riots broke out in the Place de la Bastille after the results were in, with bottles and tear gas being exchanged between police and rioters. Many fear that Sarkozy's conservatism will exacerbate the tensions between the poor and the middle class. Sarkozy advocates for a hard line on immigration and law and order. Segolene Royal, the beautiful woman socialist candidate wanted to raise the minimum wage and create subsidized jobs for young people.
Evidently the french kick our derrieres when it comes to voter turnout: 85.5 percent! The vote was a close one with Sarkozy at 53% and Royal at 47%.
